Mission

Beyond the Algorithm was shaped through our shared experience of witnessing the generative AI revolution. As college students, we've seen how these technologies are quietly transforming the education system, the workforce, the environment, and even our cognitive habits.

Corporations and policymakers often disregard the long-term societal costs. It was about time that somebody spoke up about the negative effects being imprinted on past, present, and future generations.

Our nonprofit advocates for responsible artificial intelligence regulation across corporations and government — while educating and protecting local communities from the risks of AI over-reliance. We believe AI can be a force for good, but only if there are sufficient protections in place to guard against its potential harms.

About Us

We're three college students from Chicago who looked up one day and realized the conversation around AI was completely missing the point.

The focus was always on what AI can do — faster, smarter, more productive. Nobody was having an honest conversation about what it costs. The planet. The workforce. The slow erosion of how we actually think. We decided to start that conversation ourselves.

Beyond the Algorithm isn't backed by a foundation or a grant. It's a grassroots nonprofit built on the belief that the people most affected by AI deserve a seat at the table when the rules get written.

Human Judgement Comes First
No system should replace human responsibility, moral reasoning, or accountability.

Accountability Before Progress
Corporations that profit from AI must be legally responsible for its environmental, economic, and ethical failures. Progress does not excuse harm.

Regulation Is Not Censorship
Unchecked technological power concentrates control. Regulation distributes it — and that's a good thing.

Environmental Reality
AI is resource-extractive and energy-intensive. All technological systems must operate within the limits of our planet.

Economic Dignity
People are not expendable inputs. We oppose disproportionate AI-driven job displacement without adequate worker protections.

Transparency is Key
People have the right to understand how a system works, how it may affect them, and who is accountable when it causes harm.

Local Power Matters
Regulation should begin at the local and state levels — where communities can set realistic boundaries on how AI enters their daily lives.

Critical Thought is a Public Good
Education, media, and cultural spaces cannot be replaced by automation. Original thought must never be outsourced.

Equity and Social Wellbeing
AI development must not exacerbate social inequalities or erode human rights, privacy, or societal trust.

What we do

Programs & Events

Our work runs on three pillars: community education, policy advocacy, and network-building. Everything we do is designed to put real people in the room where AI decisions get made.

Educational Workshops
Accessible sessions for high schoolers, college students, and the general public on AI literacy, cognitive over-reliance, and how to advocate for yourself in an AI-saturated world.

Locally organized events in Chicago where residents can connect, learn, and take coordinated action on AI regulation at the local and state level.

Policy Advocacy
We make sure our community's voice reaches local, state, and federal government. Meaningful regulation starts at home — and we're building the infrastructure to make it happen.

Plain-language guides and research summaries so every person — regardless of technical background — can understand the AI systems shaping their lives.
